Maintaining and developing harmonious economic relations with foreign countries
is essential to Japan. To achieve this end, Japan needs to promote mutual understanding
with foreign countries. IIST, for this purpose, has been inviting opinion leaders
from around the world to Japan since 1990 under a the program subsidized by
JKA and supervised by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The invited
leaders learn the latest information about Japanese politics, economy, society,
and culture; and exchange opinions and interact with their counterpart in Japan.
Upon their return home, they are expected to promote better understanding of
Japan to the people in their own countries.

This program invites educators from local schools in Europe and America
that teach the children of Japanese company employees, and is a part
of the effort to facilitate the local activities of Japanese companies
located overseas. The aim was for educators from Europe and America to
become familiar with Japanese culture, history, and society through school
visits, homestays, and sightseeing so they could better understand Japan
